Texture of animated movement is affected by the amount of extremes and their spacing between each other within each unfolding phrase of action.
A phrase of organic movement would need at minimal- 3 extremes- one for starting position, one at stopping point and one somewhere in between to describe the curvature of unfolding arc; and more importantly, to initiating a leading force within structure for delay parts to follow.
If there is only 3 key points (extremes) for a structure to pass through, the less error to form’s volume control; and with precision spacing established by timing chart, the speed will be very precise in accelerate, constant and decelerate.
Because of all these precisions, texture of movement can appears very graceful but also clockwork and mechanical.
To sum up, regardless of distance traveled-
-The lesser amount of extremes, the greater the control of volumes and velocity, the more precise and mechanical, and lesser control in texture of delaying parts.
-The more extremes within a phrase, the more control to detail of delaying parts, the more complex the texture of velocity and forms; (if over emphasis, movements become overly busy and parts might not correspond to compliment each other in whole).
To find this happy balance is a sense we each acquire and uniquely to each, with roots in the communicative intent of movement.

These posts are great, Mike! I love the way that you address the advantages/disadvantages of pose-to-pose and more straight-ahead animation. You have cleared up a lot of questions I have had.
