Unfolding extremes forward-

rainplace-hippo-swing-2.jpg

This workflow begins with the search to establish all anchor points (extremes) in forward unfolding manner.

Since life unfolds forward in time, this approach allows the animator to mirror closer to reality physics; (as opposed to the previous plotting approach, going back and forth).

It also has the advantages of having some sense of flow to movement during animating, because extremes are unfolding in orderly forward manner, with new extreme being guided by the ones already locked.

With only concerns to extremes, the scene is not clustered with many secondary drawings in an unfolding arc, allowing a very clear and precise way to address the progression of the compartments within a structure.

One key element to consider- the second extreme after the initial start-up extreme within a phrase (arc) is very critical in 2 ways-

- First, it established the projection of arc.

- Second, it established the leading cause to movement, then delay parts and follow-through of compartments.

Textures of movement to this animating approach have a more natural feel, while being very clear and streamline.

The down side is it can be very straight forward and slick; nature- while broad stroke might appears precise and predictable, the unfolding moments carries certain ‘uncertainty’ that is not clock-work.

Another down side is since there are fewer amounts of drawings to roll with, it is harder to have a better sense of velocity during animating; in turn, may not allow one to address squash-and-stretch correctly. Also, speed of movement, controlled by timing chart, is a calculated guess that might be a bit off to certain natural ‘feel’.

Hi Mike -
I have been following your site for a while now, and have been learning so much! I was wondering if I could share my short animated film, “Snow Problem” with you. It is available for viewing at:
